The Department of Children & Families received $1.7 million in federal grants in October 2003, for three of the nation's seven pilot projects to increase access to relationship skills and marriage education to families who have become involved with the child welfare system.
- The Florida Marriage and Family Research Institute Project provides individual and group counseling to couples and families, pre-marital counseling, and training to social services staff. (University of Central Florida - Orlando, FL 407-823-1748)
- The Big Bend Strengthening Marriages & Relationships Project provides in-home support, counseling and referral services to participating families. (Big Bend Community-Based Care - Tallahassee, FL 850-575-7679).
- The Building Local Capacity for Healthy Marriage and Family Formation Project is expanding the capacity of department and community-based care providers to work with couples in promoting healthy family formation and marriage using PAIRS curriculum. Two related relationship skills and marriage education projects include:
- Healthy Families Plus has launched the nation's first Building Strong Families Project for unmarried couples who have just had or about to have a child. (Orlando, FL 407-649-9638 & Ft. Lauderdale, FL 954-561-9681)
- Children's Home Society of Florida is one of seven organizations in the nation implementing the Post-Adoption Services and Marriage Education Project for families who have adopted special needs children and want assistance with the challenges of transitioning into a new home.
